Heat pumps in Cape Coral
Most Cape Coral homes heat with electricity, 95% by the Census count, so the choice is a heat pump or an AC with electric heat strips. A heat pump is the same machine as an AC that can also run in reverse, and it heats more cheaply than strips.

What you probably have now
Census figures for 2020 to 2024 show 95% of homes in the Cape Coral ZIP codes heat with electricity. That usually means one of two setups:
- A heat pump. The outdoor unit cools in summer and reverses in winter, pulling heat from outside air into the house. It usually also has backup heat strips in the air handler for the coldest mornings or for defrost.
- A straight AC with heat strips. The outdoor unit only cools. Heat comes from electric resistance coils in the air handler, which work like a toaster.
To tell which you have, look at the outdoor unit's data plate for the model type, or check whether the outdoor unit runs when the thermostat calls for heat. If it does, it's a heat pump.
Heat pump vs AC with heat strips
For cooling, they are the same. The difference is winter. Heat strips turn electricity directly into heat. A heat pump moves heat, which takes less electricity for the same warmth. In Cape Coral, winter is short: the recent January average low is 55°F. So the savings are real but smaller than up north, and the decision often comes down to the price difference on the equipment.
| Heat pump | AC + heat strips | |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling | Same | Same |
| Heating cost | Lower | Higher |
| Federal minimum | 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 | 14.3 SEER2 under 45,000 Btu/h, 13.8 SEER2 at 45,000 and up |
| Parts that can fail | Adds a reversing valve and defrost controls | Fewer parts outdoors |
If you're replacing an AC-plus-strips system, I'd price a heat pump alongside the straight AC. If the difference is small, the heat pump is the better buy. If the gap is large, the AC is fine in a climate with a few cold weeks a year.
Efficiency minimums
Federal standards changed in 2023. In the Southeast, a split AC installed on or after January 1, 2023 must be at least 14.3 SEER2 under 45,000 Btu/h (under about 3.75 tons) and 13.8 SEER2 at 45,000 and up. The DOE says it is illegal for a contractor to install a split AC below the regional standard in the Southeast. Heat pumps nationally must meet 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. SEER2 measures cooling efficiency; HSPF2 measures heating efficiency.
Refrigerant changed too. New residential systems made from January 1, 2025 must use refrigerants with a global warming potential of 700 or less, which in practice means new equipment no longer uses R-410A. Existing R-410A heat pumps can still be repaired. Details are in Florida AC rules for 2026.
What it costs
Fixr puts a heat pump install at $5,000 to $15,000, with an average around $8,350. Compare a central AC at $5,800 to $14,400 on the same source. The range is wide because of tonnage, efficiency, whether the air handler is replaced too, and how much duct and electrical work is needed.
Ask for every replacement quote itemized: tonnage, SEER2 and HSPF2, refrigerant, whether the air handler is included, the stand or pad, the permit, disposal of the old unit, and warranty registration. In Cape Coral a replacement needs the city's A/C Change Out permit, pulled by a licensed contractor or owner-builder. See is this AC quote fair and AC replacement in Cape Coral.
On rebates: FPL offers a $200 instant credit on a qualifying new indoor and outdoor system rated 15.2 SEER2 or higher, installed by an FPL Participating Independent Contractor, for FPL residential customers only. Most of Cape Coral is served by LCEC, not FPL, so that credit usually doesn't apply here. LCEC offers a free usage analysis on its website. If you live in Fort Myers, which is largely FPL, check your bill. More in lowering an AC bill on LCEC or FPL.
Common heat pump repairs
- Stuck in heat or cool. Often the reversing valve or its solenoid, or a thermostat wiring issue.
- Runs but blows lukewarm in winter. It may be in defrost, which is normal for a few minutes, or the backup strips aren't coming on.
- The same failures as any AC, from capacitors to clogged drains. See AC repair in Cape Coral.
Questions Cape Coral homeowners ask
Is a heat pump worth it in Cape Coral?
Often, if the price difference over a straight AC is small. It cools the same and heats more cheaply than electric strips, though Cape Coral winters are short.
What is the minimum SEER2 for a heat pump in Florida?
Heat pumps must meet 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 under the federal standard.
Can I get the FPL rebate in Cape Coral?
Only if you are an FPL residential customer. Most of Cape Coral is served by LCEC, which does not offer the FPL credit.
